Of Course, the righteous can sin. John in 1 John 2:1 writes, My little children these things write I unto you that you sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
The question is, when the righteous sins, what happens to the sin? and what happens to the righteous? Again we must turn to 1 John 2:1. Let's meet this question head on. No dancing or side stepping.
If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous. What does Jesus Christ the righteous do. He does the job of a Lawyer for two sets of people. (1) for all of God's children (2) for all of the world.
How Does It Work
For the Children
Jesus Christ the Righteous stands in the presence of God the Father and (1:John1:9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
What if we do not confess
If we do not confess our sins, then what? The answer is found in Prov. 28:13. He that covereth his sins shall not prosper but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. The child of God already believes on the Lord Jesus Christ. He does not have to believe again. He only has to confess and forsake his sins. He only has to come boldly before the throne of Grace that he may obtain mercy and find Grace to help (Heb. 4:16).
According to Heb. 4. 14-15 when we come and confess, we have a High Priest who understands and empathizes with us. He knows our struggles, he can be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, because he went through the same types of struggles and temptation that we are going through. Because of that we ought not to feel shame and abashed in coming to the Lord, we can come boldly. At his mercy seat we will receive mercy and grace. Not only are we forgiven for our sins through the mercy of God but we receive grace to deal with the future challenges.
Doesn't unconfessed sin causes the Christian to lose his Salvation
No. Nowhere in the Bible does the scriptures say that the Christian loses his salvation because of unconfessed sin. Conversely the Bible shows that all his sins are covered by the blood of Jesus Christ the moment he outs his faith in Jesus. When he puts his faith in Jesus, he declared righteous like Abraham. Even though Abraham sinned after God declared him righteous God had already imputed righteousness to him and therefor the Psalmist describes the blessedness of that man (1) the Lord will not impute sin to him. But definitely unconfessed sin does quite a few things.
1) It hampers you prosperity and progress
2) It affects you emotional health (Psalm 32:3-4. When I kept silent my boans wasted away through my groanings
3) You intimacy and fellowship with God is dislodged (Eph. 4:30)
4) Answering of prayer is hampered (Psalm 66:18)
An example is found in 1 Sam. 28:6. Because of Saul's sin God refused to answer him. 1 Sam. 28:15 And Saul answered, “I am deeply distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and does not answer me anymore, neither by prophets nor by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may reveal to me what I should do.”
Key Takeaways
Don't hide from God. Remember for a simple thing like being naked and seeing each other naked Adam and Eve hid themselves, they were ashamed. Show your self to God in all you nakedness and shame.
Done stay silent. Silence is a recipe for depression, frustration Psalm 32:3-5. If you can find someone you can trust John 5:16.
Psalm 51:3 Own up to your transgression and sin.
Confess and repent.
Remember and Do
Confess
Apoligise
Repent
Evidence
What about the Ungodly
Unless the ungodly believe in the lord Jesus Christ he will not be declared righteous. No amount of confession or repentance will clear him from sin that was passed on him through Adam's sin. He must be declared righteous. Sin will only further aggravate God and accumulate evidence against himself. (Rom.2:5)
